Looks like the reservoir may be open later than through the end of the 2016 season as originally stated. Info from NOVA Parks:
Beaverdam Reservoir, owned by Loudoun Water, is first and foremost a source of public drinking water. Loudoun Water has partnered with the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority (NOVA Parks) to manage recreational activities and public access until the spring/summer of 2017. At that time it will close to complete needed repairs to the infrastructure. After repairs are complete, expected to take approximately 1.5 to 2 years, the property will reopen for public access under the management responsibilities of NOVA Parks.
We met with Loudoun Water and NoVA parks at the reservoir today to view the progress and to discuss opening details. The great news is the reservoir is opening a few days early, this Saturday!
Please park in designated areas on Mt. Hope Rd. Do not park on the church side. Please stay away from the actual dam and spillway! Rules will be similar to other NVRPA (NoVA Parks) areas that allow car-top carry boats. There is no boat ramp or dock, as such, no trailers allowed. More details to follow.
Around late October, very early November the levels at the reservoir started going down. It has currently been completely drained. You can see the top of the bridge from the Mt. Hope parking lot. Below are some images.
Just a quick executive summary on the board meeting last night.
Fred Jennings made a presentation at 4:15PM
No Public access
No dates for construction start or end
No RFPs submitted
No stakeholder involvement
Loudoun Rowing club will continue to have access at least until the end of 2014
Hidden dangers abound as well as possible algaecide use make it too dangerous for public access
We had a large turnout for the public comment session. Fred Jennings left, however Mark Peterson, LW director of stakeholder communications was there to listen to our comments. Supervisor Williams and Reid pressed hard for access. Supervisor Clarke didn’t mention a word about it even though it sits in her district! You can view the video footage here:
Williams has asked us to give Loudoun Water a chance to respond otherwise he will continue to apply pressure, he is truly our ally here. The best thing we can do right now is to get more signatures to the petition and continue to raise awareness. We are making excellent headway!
Sheriff’s deputies are now patrolling the main entrances from 8AM to 10PM. These increased patrols are being payed for by Loudoun Water, which really means Loudoun Water customers.
Looks like things are heating up on Cleanup Beaverdam Reservoir’s Facebook page as well as Loudoun Water’s Facebook page. Lets get the word out, the more people that know, the better!
Today Loudoun Water completed the purchase of all Loudoun based water assets from Fairfax, this includes the reservoir, water treatment plant and pipeline along the W&OD. Funding was provided by water rate increase in 2012.
